David Norris started in the computer industry working on the LACES computer Systems at Heathrow in 1978, starting off life as an Assembler programmer.
Realising that programming was not his strength he moved rather rapidly into analysis playing a major role in the design of ACP 80 DEPS the customs entry system. After the implementation he left and joined Rank Xerox as a systems analyst. Arriving just as they lost their patents he spent four turbulent years leading projects to revamp the costs and efficiency of Xerox in a competitive market.
After a brief stay at Calor Gas in search of RDBMS experience, David joined Coopers & Lybrand (C&L) in 1984 and, at the age of 30, turned his back on enterprise systems for the delights of business intelligence and the life of a consultant, a move he has never regretted.
In 1986 he designed a star schema database for the AA without realising that was what it was! After eight years at C&L he joined Dun & Bradstreet, rising to become a VP of Technical Strategy and Quality - in which role he worked in the US as a pioneer on very large data warehouses. Returning to Europe, he worked as an independent consultant before joining Tandem to look after Telco BI, specialising in operational data stores and near real-time warehousing. As a result of acquisitions David ended up working for HP. With David approaching 50, he decided a change of career was called for.

An internationally known IT Industry Analyst, Martin has an unrivalled grasp of the complexities of the IT sector built on research and practical experience. His ability to offer clear explanations of the issues, spoken or written, is widely valued.
Martin's grasp of IT is founded on the early years of his career, when he built major software systems in both financial and technical application areas. Several of his systems were acclaimed as "legendary" in their reliability, and they went on to join the much discussed software legacy.
Taking responsibility for the entire IT provision of a well-known City professional firm, Martin pursued both innovation and efficiency. He was the driving force behind, amongst others, an advanced OO practice management system and early Internet adoption.
For three years, Martin worked as a director of Bloor Research, handling research and consulting roles. He wrote an influential paper for IBM describing the deployment of CRM in the insurance industry. He chaired numerous Bloor Research conferences. He was keynote speaker at prestigious client events such as Computer Associates' CEO Exchange and Hewlett Packard's EMEA Storage Roadshow. He completed high level consultancy assignments with major financial companies and government organisations. And he wrote numerous papers and articles.
Now independent, Martin continues to have a strong interest in trends across the IT sector. Areas currently studied in depth include CRM, security, software development and infrastructure. Martin's work continues to include consultancy assignments, research and writing. He frequently speaks in public at conferences and other events and his weekly Devil's Advocate column is one of the most popular features on silicon.com.
